Guide

How to Use

Current Features

Bring in a rubric, check it, then export

The app supports pasted rubric text, spreadsheet tables, Word documents, PDFs, SACE performance standards, numeric and named performance scales, and rubrics built from scratch.

  • Flexible importXLSX, XLS, CSV, PDF, DOCX, Google Classroom text, Markdown tables, A-E grades, numeric scales, and named performance bands.
  • Full reviewEdit criteria names, grades, points, score ranges, descriptors, order, and missing information.
  • Automatic recoveryConverted rubrics, Build work, pasted text, and settings are saved on this device.
  • Repair and exportReview validation, optionally use AI Import Repair, then copy or download Compass-ready JSON.
  • Build from scratchCreate a rubric in the Build tab when there is nothing to import, then export or print it the same way.
  • Printable sheetPrint the rubric as an A4 marking sheet, landscape or portrait, in the Avenues College style or a plain style with no logos.

Paste Text

Paste a rubric from Classroom, a table, or a document

  1. 1

Copy the complete rubric.Include headings, grades, points or mark totals, and descriptors where possible.

  2. 2

Paste and convert.Paste into Step 1, then select Convert rubric. Google Classroom text, Markdown tables, copied spreadsheet cells, A-E grades, numeric levels, and named bands are recognised.

  3. 3

Review the result.Rename generic Criteria 1 labels, check level order and points, and complete any blank descriptors before export.

  4. 4

Use Clear when needed.Clear Text empties the paste box and keeps the converted rubric. Clear rubric in Step 2 removes the rubric and the pasted text so you can start again.

Upload a File

Upload a spreadsheet, Word document, or PDF

  1. 1

Choose a supported file.Use XLSX, XLS, CSV, DOCX, or PDF. SACE performance-standard documents are supported too.

  2. 2

Drop or select the file.Use the upload area in Step 1. For workbooks with several sheets, the app chooses the sheet that looks most like a rubric.

  3. 3

Check the detected structure.Review criteria names, grade order, points, score ranges, and descriptors before export.

  4. 4

Adjust SACE splitting if shown.Keep numbered criteria for individual standard paragraphs, or turn splitting off to retain larger strands.

Print

Print the rubric as a marking sheet

  1. 1

Open the Print tab.Choose whether to print the converted rubric or the rubric you built.

  2. 2

Pick a style and a page.Avenues College uses the school colours, Arial, and the school logo. Plain uses the same layout in neutral greys with no logos, for sharing outside the school. Choose A4 landscape or A4 portrait.

  3. 3

Fill in the optional lines.Subtitle, course, unit, a details line such as Type and Weighting, and a footer note. Leave any of them empty to hide them. The switches below turn off the capability line, the scores, the grade and feedback boxes, and the student and date line.

  4. 4

Check the preview, then print. The preview shows the real A4 pages, so you can see where the rubric breaks before printing. Only the sheet is printed. Use Save as PDF in the print dialog if you want a file.

SACE Performance Standards

Import a SACE subject outline or performance standards rubric

  1. 1

Download the SACE document.Download the subject outline or the standalone performance standards rubric for the required subject.

  2. 2

Keep the Performance Standards heading. The document must contain the words “Performance Standards” in its heading or content, such as “Performance Standards for Stage 2 Digital Technologies”. The subject name can be different.

  3. 3

Save it as Word or PDF.Use a Word .docx file or PDF and keep the complete A-E performance standards table. Scanned image-only PDFs may not contain readable text.

  4. 4

Upload and review the split criteria.Drop the file into Step 1. When SACE is detected, choose whether to split each standards paragraph into numbered criteria, then check every imported descriptor.

Table Format Tips

Use grade, numeric, or named performance columns

  1. 1

Put criteria in the first column.Use a heading such as Criteria, Skill Area, Outcome, or Category, then place one criterion on each row.

  2. 2

Use consistent level columns.Levels can be A-E, numbers such as 0-4, labels such as Emerging 1, or named bands such as Starting Out through Excellent.

  3. 3

Totals can stay at the end.A trailing Score, Mark, Total, or Max points column such as /4 is treated as criterion information, not another performance level.

  4. 4

Watch for repeated blocks. The parser removes exact repeated criteria where possible, but always confirm the final criterion count.

AI Import Repair

Repair an incomplete or unrecognised import

  1. 1

Try normal conversion first. The app always uses its local parser before offering AI. Review the imported rubric before requesting repair.

  2. 2

Select AI Import Repair. When available, the structured rubric and a relevant extracted text excerpt are sent for analysis. The original document file is not uploaded.

  3. 3

Review every proposed change.Compare renamed criteria and descriptor changes. AI can repair blank cells or damaged structure, but it can still misunderstand assessment wording.

  4. 4

Accept only when correct. The current rubric is unchanged until you select Accept Repair. Close the dialog to discard the proposal.

Troubleshooting

What to check when an import looks wrong

  1. 1

Check the complete table was copied.Include the header row, every criterion, all performance levels, and descriptors. Missing headers make level direction harder to detect.

  2. 2

Complete blank cells.Blank descriptors remain visible for manual correction or AI repair. Compass export validation identifies incomplete levels.

  3. 3

Check PDF text selection.Image-only or scanned PDFs need OCR before import. If text cannot be selected in the PDF, this app cannot reliably read it.

  4. 4

Clear and try again.Use Clear Text or Clear rubric before testing a different source, then review criterion count, level order, points, and descriptors.

Build From Scratch

Create a new rubric without importing

  1. 1

Open Build and name the rubric.Start with the blank criterion and five default performance levels.

  2. 2

Add criteria or levels.Add level applies the new level across every Build criterion so the scale stays consistent.

  3. 3

Complete every field.Add criteria names, grade names, points, and student-friendly descriptors. Reorder levels with the arrow controls.

  4. 4

Export the built rubric.Select Export built rubric to open Step 4 with the built rubric chosen, review validation, then download the Compass JSON. The converted rubric is not changed.

Settings and Export

Choose Compass behaviour, validate, and download

  1. 1

Review score settings.Use scores includes point values. Score ranges add minimum and maximum values. Allow partial grading lets teachers award results between listed levels.

  2. 2

Check access settings.Staff, parent, student, rubric, and score access control who can view the imported rubric and awarded results in Compass. Self-assessment lets students grade themselves, and Task breakdown report chooses whether reports show the full rubric or a summary.

  3. 3

Resolve validation messages.Every rubric needs a name, criteria, level names, numeric points, and descriptors. Export remains available for review, but incomplete data must be corrected.

  4. 4

Download and import.Download JSON, then in Compass Resources choose Tools, Add Content, Import Rubric, and select the downloaded file.

Step 4

Exports the converted rubric from Step 2. Choose Built rubric to export the Build tab instead.
